Class: Social Connection and Disconnection

I started teaching a class called Social Connection and Disconnection in Oct 2023. I don’t create a formal syllabus (the Canvas page essentially IS the syllabus), but I created an informal one that I am happy to share with anyone who’s interested. Please contact me if you’d like a copy.

What kind of career path will allow me to focus on making the world a more human, connected place?

Students have asked me this question, so I posed the question on LinkedIn and lots of kind folks shared their thoughts. Their responses fit into a few themes:

1. You can bring a focus on social connection to any kind of job!
2. Having said that, there may be some jobs where social connection is more obviously relevant/centered
3. There are organizations that you might want to check out
4. And there are things that you can do right now!
5. Start by focusing on your connection to yourself and understanding what kind of career fits with your values

Resources

Over the years, friends and colleagues have asked students in their classes to talk to a stranger, as part of a classroom exercise. I’ve recorded a little video that you can share with your students, to provide a little encouragement. I want students to know: You’ve got this, and it will be fun!
